To provide a broad variety of survival and transitional services to disadvantaged persons that will enable them to withstand the effects of poverty and to help them fully participate in the social and economic mainstream of society.
That is the mission statement of the North Columbia Community Action Council (NCCAC). And that’s why they are partnering with AmeriCorps and the Moses Lake Prosperity Center May 9 to 16 to raise money for the Angel Fund, which provides assistance for people in Adams, Grant and Franklin counties who are terminally ill and may need help with transportation, medical bills, prescriptions, hotel stays and the like.
“The Community Action Council has been in the area for about 40 years,” Candi Allison, executive assistant with NCCAC, said. “There are more than 1,000 agencies nation-wide, 31 in Washington state. Each one is different. Some help low-income people through Head Start. We provide transitional housing, which is kind of like in between a homeless shelter and regular housing.”
Money from the Angel Fund is also used to help with everyday needs, such as clothing, food, diapers, blankets, etc., for low-income and homeless families and individuals.
“We also provide energy assistance and money for weatherizing homes,” Allison said. “We have a mobile home repair program, too. Last year, we renovated three in Grant County and next year, we’ll renovate two mobile homes in Adams County.”
Another program offered by the NCCAC is a home-buyers assistance program for low-income individuals to purchase a home or help those who may be at risk of losing their homes due to mortgage default.
Donations for the Angel Fund are being accepted at the Moses Lake Safeway store on May 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and May 16 at the Moses Lake Wal-Mart store from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
If people are unavailable to make these dates, Allison said they can always mail in a contribution.
“We are always in need of donations, so people can donate anytime they like,” she said.
The NCCAC is a 501 c3 not for profit organization governed by a board of directors representing the low-income, public and private sectors of the community.
The Angel Fund is a donation driven local fund NCCAC uses to assist families in crisis with basic, everyday living needs. Eligibility is based on need and the availability of other resources
