Mid-Columbia Libraries will “read for the record”
Mid-Columbia Libraries will join libraries and groups around the globe in hosting storytime events with Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar this Thursday, Oct. 8. By listening to or reading the book, children will add to the national count for Read for the Record, an initiative by Jumpstart to raise awareness of early education and the importance of reading with young children.
The Mid-Columbia Libraries Board of Trustees has proclaimed Oct. 8 “Read for the Record Day” for the library district, as has Mayor Dale Jackson for the city of West Richland. Mayor Tom Moak will proclaim Oct. 8 “Read for the Record Day” for Kennewick. By sending letters of invitation to mayors and city administrators, Mid-Columbia Libraries has invited all cities within its service area to participate in Read for the Record. Community members are invited to participate by attending one of the Read for the Record storytimes at their local branch of Mid-Columbia Libraries. Read for the Record was initiated by Jumpstart in 2006. Jumpstart, which began in 1993, is one of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations in early childhood education. Mid-Columbia Libraries participates in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record initiative to celebrate the joy of reading with children and to support Mid-Columbia Libraries’ primary goal to provide young children with the resources and opportunities they need to start school ready to learn.
