Sally Salinas, 1928 – 2010

A devoted mother, loving wife, caring grandmother and generous friend, Sally peacefully passed away from Alzheimer’s, complicated by her diabetes and heart disease, Jan. 1, 2010, at Columbia Crest Care and Rehabilitation Center in Moses Lake.

Sally was born in Ordway, Colo., July 2, 1928, to Frank and Madalena Ochoa, the third child out of six.

She went to elementary school in Fort Morgan, Colo., and finished high school at White Swan, Wash.

At 20 years of age, Sally married her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Salinas, Aug. 21, 1948, in Yakima. They have been married 61 years.

Through this very special union, Sally and Dan had three children Daniel, Jimmy and Sandra.

After the last child was born, they moved to Kansas, then Colorado, where they farmed until 1967, returning to Washington state and settling in the Royal Slope area.

Sally was always very active in the community with her friends and family.

She loved sewing, oil painting, making quilts, decorating cakes, flower gardening and floral arranging, in addition to helping with the local food bank and driving school bus. Sally volunteered at the local fire department, was a member of the Crab Creek Cacklers, as well as an integral influence in her grandchildren’s lives.

Sally was a generous and caring individual who never let you leave her home without a meal.

She loved country music and dancing so much so that she later became very active in the Civil War Re-Enactment organization, where she would dance the Virginia reel, various waltzes and polkas.

Sally had a terrific sense of humor, an infectious positive attitude and a strong work ethic that she passed on to her children.

Sally’s presence and influence will be greatly missed by those fortunate to have known her.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Nellie Dawson and Mary Lou Vigil and one brother Luis Ochoa.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of 61 years, Daniel Salinas; her two sons Daniel (Linda) Salinas, of Othello, and Jimmy (Adriana) Salinas of Spokane; one daughter Sandra (Don Sebesta) Tyler, of Othello; two grandsons Dusty and Daniel Tyler, of Moses Lake; six granddaughters Danielle Salinas, of Yakima, Tracy Salinas, of Vancouver, Hollie (Eddie) Scott, of Spokane, Jamie (Junie) Sepulveda, of Moses Lake, Liz (Ramon) Salinas, of Othello, Jamie (Ronald) Masiantonio, of McMinnville, Ore.; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother Frank Ochoa, of Basin City; one sister Sophia Banes, of Chalmers, Ind.; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, including her loving little dog Daisy.

It was Sally’s request that her Memorial Celebration be held in the Springtime — the season of new beginnings.

Our family would like to extend an invitation to friends and family in helping us honor her life on March 20, 2010. The time and location will be announced at a later date.
