With a conference record of 3-9 and six CWAC games remaining, the Othello boys basketball team has all but played themselves out of the district tournament.

Four of their remaining six games are against the top four CWAC teams, which are all on the road, with the exception of Ellensburg on Feb. 16 in Othello.

The Huskies have lost eight consecutive conference games and haven’t won in the CWAC since Dec. 22 when they beat East Valley in Yakima.

Following a three-point loss at Toppenish Friday, the Huskies hosted the Grandview Greyhounds the following night, losing by 11 and falling to 3-9 in the CWAC.

In the opening quarter against Grandview, the Huskies fell behind by 14 points as the Greyhounds took an early 22-8 lead.

Following poor first quarter free throw shooting, the Huskies outscored Grandview 18-10 in the second and ended the half down by six at 32-40.

“We got behind in the first quarter, then we came back at them pretty tough in the second,” coach Pete Patitucci said.

Sophomore Drew Scott had a monstrous day under the glass, grabbing a game-high 19 rebounds. He also led the Huskies with 19 points.

Jeremy Cerrillo had another outstanding game dropping 17 points, grabbing seven boards and dishing five assists.

“Drew Scott played a heck of a game with 19 points and 19 rebounds and Jeremy finally played a complete game with 17 points,” Patitucci said.

Both teams split the third quarter evenly with 17 points, but a fourth quarter push gave the Greyhounds the 69-58 victory in Othello.

“We played pretty well … but we lost,” Patitucci said.

Sophomore Caleb Garza swiped a season-high seven steals for the Huskies and added nine points.

Senior Jesse Espinoza had eight rebounds and nine points.

The previous night at
Toppenish, the Huskies took an early first quarter lead 20-17 and by the end of the half, extended their lead to eight at 40-32.

Cerrillo led Othello with 15 points, including three of seven from downtown.

He also grabbed six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

The senior guard is leading the Huskies in scoring, averaging 12.2 points a game, and is hitting over 42 percent of his shots from behind the arc.

The Wildcats climbed within six at the end of three, 47-41.

The fourth quarter was dominated by Toppenish as they outscored Othello 19-11 on their way to a 61-58 victory.

“We really played a good first half and were up by eight,” Patitucci said. “And then they didn’t do much in the third quarter and neither did we … then they got hot in the fourth quarter and we didn’t.”

Senior Jesse Espinoza led the Huskies with eight rebounds and added 13 points. Espinoza is second on the team, grabbing 5.4 rebounds a game.

D.J. Cantu led Othello with three blocked shots and three steals.

Scott grabbed seven boards and blocked two shots.

He leads the Huskies with 9.3 rebounds a game.

The Huskies travel to the 5-7 East Valley Red Devils Friday and the 10-2 Wapato Wolves Saturday.

“We have to beat East Valley Friday and get a win to qualify for districts … then Wapato on Saturday and both on the road,” Pattitucci said. “Maybe we can get them on their home turf.”
