Othello Youth Baseball-Softball has attended two council meetings and three committee meetings regarding the City of Othello increasing its fees to the association from $100 to use the park, lights, water and concessions to $1,000 then to $1,350 and finally, the last increase to $1,350, plus extra money for repairs and cleaning. We and other community members have pointed out to the council that property owners already pay for maintenance and use of public facilities through the parks and recreation tax that is applied and collected on our property. Some have called it a hidden double taxation. At city council, this $1,350-plus fee was compared to paying a fee to use state parks. State parks do not collect money from our property tax. In our recent meeting with the park and recreation committee, our association respectfully declined to enter into a contract with the committee-council for $1,350 plus some. Citizens, I tell you now body language speaks a million words. One council member angrily pushed his papers to the center of the table, others began to sigh and roll their eyes, some leaned back in their chairs and crossed their arms. We did tell the committee we were willing to operate under the same conditions as we have for so many years, which is $100 for access to the lights, water and concession stands, dragging the fields, dirt for mounds and chalk for fields. As an association, it is our duty-wish to use our funds to support the kids. It is the city council's job to listen to its citizens. Citizens of Othello, become active, voice your opinion. Write the editor, attend council meetings and give your input during open public opinion. We also call on the local media to begin covering this topic to keep the community informed.
Respectfully Othello Youth Baseball-Softball Association
