Othello martial artist Maggie Ozuna Ahearn made history in the 36th annual Central Washington Karate Championships in Yakima March 9 by becoming the first woman to become the black belt fighting grand champion in the tournament's existence.
Out of almost 900 competitors, Ahearn beat the odds to become the first woman champion in the tournament, which is one of the largest in the state. Ahearn trains under Sensei Terry Stone, of Othello's Basin School of Karate. Stone said all the competitors he trained, including Rachel Lyon, Margee Williams, Portia Garza and Cruz Garza, had outstanding performances and all brought home trophies in their divisions.
