The Othello Barracudas swim team set off for Naches Tuesday, June 11, to pick up their first win of the year by a score of 393-343. The team couldn't repeat their success during their home opener the following Thursday, falling 230-543 against an always-tough Sunnyside team. Against Naches, Barracudas swimmers won 40 of 74 races led by athletes like Hunter Sparks and Molly Jensen. Sparks took first along with his teammates in the boys 13-14 200-yard relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, the 50-yard fly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard individual medley. Jensen, a 10-year-old, took the top spot in the 200-yard relay, 50-yard fly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Barracudas head coach Becky Mohs said Sparks always does well and was able to get right back into things in his first outing of the year. The same goes for Jensen and 11-year-old Shaya Parrish who helped drive her 200-yard medley team to a 3:06.27 finish. At this point, Mohs isn't sweating the speed of the swimmers and just wants to make sure they're learning every time they hit the water. "At this point in the season, technique trumps speed," she said. "We have so many new swimmers and I'm so, so pleased because I'm seeing that they're listening all across the board. Great group of kids." Swimmers on other teams from the Mid-Valley League have a higher number of athletes who get to practice year-round, unlike the Barracudas. For Mohs, this means every meet is crucial. "We're there for the experience and for the competition," she said. "When my kids were little, we weren't in a league ... and we couldn't get into any of them. But, over the course of time, the Mid-Valley League has let us in so we've got competition and we're very grateful to have that." Nicole Douglas won the sportsmanship award at Naches for shaking hands with every competitor she faced.

Team drops home opener against Sunnyside Fourteen first-place finishes by the Barracudas wasn't enough to contend with the depth the Sunnyside Sharks were able to bring to the pool in Othello's 230-543 June 13 loss. Mohs said there were a few highlights, especially from two of her youngest relay teams. Both the 9-10 year old boys and girls teams were the only relay teams to get wins against Sunnyside. Elaina Parrish, Julia Tomer, Molly Jensen and Kailey Muro edged out the competition with a 3:47.56 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. That group also placed first in the freestyle relay. The boys team consisting of Levi Danz, Aiden and Ryan Thien and Carl Cameron took first in their freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.15. "I was extremely pleased," Mohs said. "We had that depth in the all-freestyle event, whereas in the other events we don't have that depth." The night also marked the first competition of the season for 16-year-old Tatum Sparks who placed first in three events. Along with brothers Hunter and Tanner, the Sparks family reeled in a total of nine gold medals. The Barracudas took on Grandview Tuesday, June 18, but results weren't available as of press time. Tonight, the team hosts Prosser for a home meet at the Othello Community Pool. It's set to begin at 6:30.
