Othello alumni and recent graduate of the University of Idaho, Allison Baker was recently hired on to become the new head coach of the Vikings volleyball team at Big Bend Community College. Baker said she's excited to take the helm of the program and looks forward to helping the team improve over previous years.
Baker has an impressive background in volleyball. During her career playing with Idaho, she was chosen as an all-Western Athletic Conference player for three years and was recognized as the team MVP in her sophomore year. The hard work paid off and she was selected to represent the USA and played against some of the top teams in China in 2011. Baker said all these experiences should pay off in her first official coaching job.
"Being able to see different players and teams and how they worked on the court helps to develop what kind of a coaching style I want to have and what type of court atmosphere I want to create for my players," she said.
She graduated from Idaho this past May, making her only a few years older than most of the players on her team. But, the age gap isn't of much concern to her and she plans to only focus on helping them improve.
"I'm not worried about the age gap because I think I have a lot of information," Baker said. "I want to help teach these athletes and I think they will be ready to listen and learn."
In the few remaining weeks of offseason preparations she has, Baker wants to work on hammering out what her team will look like in the fall and get everything else figured out, as well.
Another big event for her and the team is their yearly Lady Vikings Volleyball Camp set to begin July 29. Baker will work with former and current college players to teach girls in the sixth through twelfth grade to improve skills like passing, serving, hitting and defense.
The camps go from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 for three days and will be held at the DeVries Activity Center. Registration costs $90 or $110 if campers choose to purchase a three-day lunch buffet provided by the college. To register, email Baker at allisonb@bigbend.edu or visit Big Bend's volleyball webpage.
