Last week the Barracudas hosted a tough Selah team and also traveled to Sunnyside for a rematch Thursday night. Head coach Becky Mohs said her kids put in really good efforts, but the team still lost both by scores of 633-169 and 559-209. Against Selah at home Tuesday, July 2, Barracudas faced off against a team sporting almost 100 swimmers and not only contended with them, but also some strict stroke and turn judging that led to 41 total disqualifications. "We were at the mercy of an overzealous Selah stroke and turn judge," Mohs said. Mohs said there were some positive against Selah, including strong finishes from the 13-14 and 11-12 girls relay teams. Isabel Vasquez, Joey Taff, Allie Danz and Kiera Stansall made up the 13-14 year old team and they came together to take first in 200-yard medley relay with a finish of 2:36.89. The 11-12 girls team made up by Sarah Wilson, Shaya Parrish, Isabella Pruneda and Kayla Guzman took first as well, finishing in 3:14.53. Mohs said individual swimmers like Jolee Tomer, Molly Jensen, Cameron Carl and Tatum Sparks all had great meets against Selah. Sparks took first in two events, Carl placed second in all of his events while Tomer and Jensen combined for three second-place finishes. Although the sought after first-place finishes were hard to come by, Mohs said all the kids were working hard and trying their best against a very tough team.
Team finds more success at Sunnyside While the Barracudas still lost against Sunnyside, Mohs said she saw plenty of improvement from swimmers like Hazel Ramirez - a 7-year-old first year swimmer who earned a third-place finish in the 50m butterfly and a fourth-place finish in the 50m breaststroke. "She now has her strokes down and is contributing points to our team," Mohs said. Thirteen-year-old Hunter Sparks had a strong showing, taking first in the 50m butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and the 200m individual medley. Mohs said he's already a veteran at his young age and has repeatedly done well so far this season. "He consistently places first and his strokes have matured," she said. The Barracudas also showed improvement with their techniques and only picked up 11 disqualifications compared to earlier in the week against Selah. While Sunnyside doesn't enjoy as much depth on their team as Selah does, they still outnumbered the Barracudas and picked up a number of points from that alone. "Sunnyside I don't think has the depth Selah has," Mohs said. "Every one of the towns in the Mid Valley League has access to year round swimming ... we have no access to a year round pool." This week, Othello is missing a few key swimmers as they took on Grandview at home Tuesday and travel to Prosser Thursday night. Results weren't available as of press time. On Saturday, the team will head to Toppenish where their top swimmers will look to earn some ribbons in the regional tournament. Mohs said her veteran swimmers have worked hard all season long to find success there. "We have gone from our long distance endurance training to our sprint training, which is shorter distances but with more reps," she said, adding that should hopefully shave times down. "We're focusing on their specific events they have entered and working on their turns and times."
