The Othello Soccer League begins their regular season play this weekend in Othello parks, but many of the 34 teams expected to compete all summer welcomed the season with a lightning tournament held at both Taggares Park and Lions Park last weekend. 27 teams participated in separate 16-team and 8-team brackets with team Connell and G.T.O. United taking top spots. Connell started as the No. 1 seed in the 16-team bracket and won 4 straight matches to claim a $500 prize, a trophy and a set of new team uniforms they'll get to use all season. G.T.O. United, a new team for this season made up of some veteran players, also started as the top seed in the 8-team bracket and won three games to get a trophy, $250 prize and their league entry fees waived for the year. Martel Sausedo, a player for team Juventus, claimed the goals championship after scoring four times to help his team to a third place finish. OSL president Manny Martinez said the 34 teams expected to participate this summer is the most the league has ever seen in its history. The league will again be a member of the Washington State Adult Soccer Association this season and Martinez thanks the organization for sponsoring the tournament.
