A group of four Othello High School senior soccer players banded together to organize and instruct a soccer camp for the community's youth this week. The camp serves dual purposes - fulfilling the boys' senior project obligation and offering community youth a chance to learn and develop fundamental soccer skills. The four OHS soccer players are Austin Garza, Sammy Hernandez, Robert Varela and Juan Deras, all of who will be seniors at OHS in the coming academic year. The camp started Monday and will conclude tomorrow. "(Our purpose is) to teach the youth soccer skills, basically," Garza said. "We are having success for our high school and we want that to continue." Yolanda Saenz, Garza's mother and a long-time youth soccer coach, said she started helping her son with his project and the project grew as Garza invited the other boys to join. Saenz supervised the camp as Garza, Hernandez, Varela and Deras provided the instruction. Garza said the project idea spawned from a noticed lack in the community of instructional soccer camps for children. "There have not really been that many soccer camps like this for kids and we wanted to teach them the fundamentals," he said. "We wanted to have fun with the community." Approximately 10 kids showed up for soccer camp Monday. Garza said organizing and planning the weeklong event was a tall task. "It took a long time," Garza said. "At first, we didn't know how we were going to do this. We had to make up all these drills and make things for the kids so they can be able to do them." Camp registration was open for children from ages 5 to 12 with any level of soccer experience. The $15 participation cost for participants included a camp T-shirt. The camp has taken place each day of the week from 10 a.m. to noon at Hiawatha Elementary School and ends tomorrow.
