Othello's Heidi Martinez has decided to toss her hat in the running for the National American Miss Washington Pageant and has already begun her training and practice leading up to the three-day event in Tacoma beginning August 8. Martinez, 15, will be competing in the 13-to 15-year-old division at the Hotel Murano for the chance to win $1,000 cash, a chance to compete in the national tournament in California, tickets to Disneyland and a Hollywood tour. This will be her first-ever pageant and got interested in the idea after auditioning for the All-American Cheer Squad and hopes the upcoming experience would help her grow more confident while learning some new things, as well. "Whatever happens happens and I'm not going to be disappointed if I don't do anything big," she said. "Because I can't talk in front of people and get all nervous, I'm hoping I can improve on that and just be more confident, not being afraid in my little shell." There's a first time for everything, though, and Martinez hopes her training, which she started last week, will help her develop some great performances in the many categories that will be judged over the three days. She said her mom Heather played a big part in convincing her to sign up for the pageant. "My mom just said I have nothing to lose," Heidi said. "If anything, I'll just gain from it and learn from it. She said maybe I'd like it or maybe I'd love it." Martinez likes to stay busy playing sports and going to church, along with boating, four-wheeling and traveling and clearly doesn't like to stay still for very long. "I like new opportunities and I don't like doing the same thing all the time, so I'm excited to try something new and hopefully, get a positive outcome out of it," she said. "I think I'll be all right, but I still don't know what to expect, yet." Martinez and her family are looking to gain a few sponsors to help her make the trip and can be reached at (509) 989-0986.
