The Othello School District board of directors begin each meeting recognizing achievements they learn of and during the Tuesday, May 27, meeting, the board congratulated Othello High School seniors Katheryne Ortiz and Adilene Alfaro for earning two scholarships funded by school board members. School board president Tony Ashton said Alfaro wasn't present to hear them recognize her name, but Ortiz was very appreciative of the $1,875 she received with the scholarship. The board also congratulated OHS for its recent scholarship night, as well as the school's marching band for winning a gold medal in a recent competition. Next, the board congratulated OHS, McFarland Middle School, Lutacaga Elementary School and Scootney Springs Elementary School for placing out of the adequate yearly progress with higher standardized testing scores. Finally, OHS speech and debate team coach Laura Cooper gave the board a recap of their season that had them find plenty of success. Toward the end of the meeting, Ashton and the board discussed their thoughts on potentially changing what nights they meet in order to give Othello residents the opportunity to attend school board meetings and Othello city council meetings, which usually both begin at 7 p.m. most Mondays. "We've been in talks with the city trying to see what, between us, we could come up with so the citizens don't have to choose between one meeting or the other," Ashton said. "I've been in contact with Mayor (Shawn) Logan trying to figure out what we can do to make that easier for the public and I'm sure we'll come to a resolution."
