Othello Community Hospital will be hosting its 12th annual Golf Outing fundraiser this June 22 at Othello Golf Course. Golfers are asked to play for a good cause as all proceeds go toward the purchase of essential patient care equipment. The $75 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, two drinks, steak dinner plus other goodies and the top golfers can compete for a $200 cash prize for the lowest scoring round. There will also be prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. Tee time is set for noon. Participants can play by themselves or create teams of four or five players to play the Florida scramble style tournament. OCH administrative assistant Mindy Gonzalez, who helps organize the event along with the hospital's auxiliary organization, said the event and other fundraisers they put on throughout the year have raised almost $180,000 since 2002. Gonzalez said these components are costly and go a long way in treating patients and improving the hospital. "I think they're very important," she said. "We use (the money) to buy patient care equipment and a lot of it has been very successful and they use it quite a bit in the hospital." These items cost upward of $25,000 in some cases and Gonzalez said without some of these, patients would need to travel to bigger cities or seek some other resource to address their medical issues. OCH chief financial officer Mark Bunch said the hospital is able to make an additional big purchase each year thanks to the golf outing and other auxiliary fundraisers. "We can count on a piece of equipment every year from the auxiliary and it raises our visibility with the community," Bunch said. "It's been a lot of fun (even though) I'm not a golfer." The golf outing is the biggest fundraiser of the year and it's been successful in the past. Gonzalez said she hopes it will continue to grow. "It seems like every year we've increased a little bit more," she said. "We have been progressing." Gonzalez said even non-golfers can help out and can pay a $22 fee to only sign up for the dinner and auction in the clubhouse. Registration forms are available at the hospital and need to be received by June 14. Organizers are still looking for corporate sponsors and Gonzalez has asked interested businesses to contact her or Cheryl Olson to receive more information and get involved. The hospital number is 488-2636.
