5/17/2013 5:50:00 PM Altercation near motel sends one to hospital
One man was taken to Othello Community Hospital after a scuffle outside of the Cimmarron Motel April 30. At about 2:40 p.m., Mario Gomez, 23, transient, was standing on the sidewalk outside the motel office when a car full of Othello residents drove by. Following an exchange of gang signs between the man and the occupants of the vehicle, the car pulled over and one male got out and approached Gomez. There was an altercation. Gomez pulled out a knife to defend himself, stabbing the male, 19, Othello, one time in the stomach. The incident is being investigated as an assault. It appears as though Gomez was acting in self-defense only. The other man is currently in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The police learned of the matter by responding to two different emergency calls that came in. One from the hospital, reporting there was a victim of a stabbing being treated. The other from the Cimmarron Motel, reporting someone who had been previously trespassed from the property was in one of the rooms. Police investigated both calls and soon realized they were connected, Othello Police Department chief Steve Dunnagan said. The incident happened 40 or 50 feet away from a busy intersection, he said. If anyone saw anything happen, the police are still trying to make sure they have all the information and are asking witnesses to call 488-3314.
